Chandra: Journey through the Stars takes place in modern day on Mars. But in this version, everything is cute! The sky is pink, the stars are black, and the saturated hues of Mars’s red rocks create a warm, playful environment.

OUTLINE

Chapter 1: Chandra

Story: CHANDRA is frozen in an ice block, drifting through space when she enters Mars’s orbit. She gains speed and hurdles to the ground! Chandra lands in the deep center of a crater with a BOOM! Her icy shell cracks, setting her free. Chandra opens one dark eye and peers around her. Chandra can see glowing, orange PLATFORMS which mostly lead out of the crater. Then she spots a piece of ice. Chandra looks at her reflection in the ice chunk. Her face is covered in glowing, blue veins which originate from a bite mark on her arm. When she opens her left eye, the iris is glowing BLUE. Shocked, Chandra looks around her surroundings one more time. The glowing orange platforms are no longer there, but different, glowing blue platforms seem to make up the rest of the course to exit the crater.

Gameplay: Tutorial. Learn to jump, and how to toggle between RIGHT EYE (orange platforms) and LEFT EYE (blue platforms) to find your way out of the crater.

Chapter 2: Aries

Story: At the top of the crater, a bunch of small snakes glowing with an icy blue similar to the poison in your eye start to surround you. One bites you, and it freezes your feet in place. Luckily, the celestial bull TAURUS runs over and scares them off. They show you how to stand your ground by STOMPING, which creates a ripple that repels the snakes away. Taurus recognizes the scar on your arm. You see FLASHES of Chandra’s backstory: Chandra wished on a shooting star which turned out to be SERPENS, the trickster serpent constellation. Serpens bit Chandra and threw her to space. Chandra shyly tries to cover her arm. But Taurus says you need to stop the poison from spreading further. Taurus knows of a remedy written in a book in Aries’ library. Taurus gives you a map of mars. [Taurus will sit outside the library for guidance on how to make the potion.] You follow it to the library, where you meet Aries. Aries says the book is in the restricted section, mere mortals are not allowed in.

Gameplay: Toggle between RIGHT and LEFT EYE platforms to solve puzzles and move between locations. Then, sneak past Aries to retrieve the recipe book. Halfway through, you stomp some snakes away, but it alerts Aries. Now you must escape with the book before Aries can stop you!

Chapter 3: Capricorn

Story: You bring the recipe to Taurus. Taurus says now you need some ingredients. You’ll need to go to the Little Dipper, where CAPRICORN the farmer grows the correct spices. You head out of the main town on Mars to go to the countryside, where the Little Dipper lake resides. At the bottom, you meet Capricorn, who says there is only one plant left. Only a worthy challenger may earn the ingredient. Capricorn says if you can find the ingredient in their 3D maze, you can have it.

Gameplay: Toggle between RIGHT and LEFT EYE platforms to solve puzzles and move between locations. Capricorn’s maze is like a Rubik’s cube, where Capricorn can shift the boundaries of the maze at any given moment. You must toggle between RIGHT and LEFT EYE platforms to work your way through this 3D maze. Beware ice-eels, which have a similar effect as the ice snakes.

Chapter 5: Virgo

Story: Once you retrieve the ingredients and bring them to Taurus, Taurus tells you the next thing you need is a special knife. Virgo has one in her kitchen. You head to the nearby Shabu Shabu restaurant, where Virgo prepares thinly sliced meats and fresh vegetables. Virgo says their knife is very special, and only trained chefs can use it. Your'e not trained, so Virgo offers to give you a cooking lesson! Virgo: "If you can master the basics, I'll loan you my knife."

Gameplay: Toggle between RIGHT and LEFT EYE platforms to solve puzzles and move between locations. Dodge Virgo's knife! Hop over the knife as it chops, dodge its stabs, and pry Virgo's fingers off it one by one as Virgo crushes garlic with the side of the knife.

Chapter 6: Libra

Story: Once you get the knife, you head outside where LIBRA is waiting. They ask you if you have a permit for your knife. When you say you do not, they YOINK the knife from you. Libra: “You’ll have to go through the necessary paperwork first!” Libra takes the knife to the COUNTY JAIL, where you can retrieve it by filling out the necessary paperwork.

Gameplay: It is surprisingly easy to get the necessary paperwork. Toggle between RIGHT and LEFT EYE platforms to correctly answer the questions on the Knife-permit form.

Chapter 7: Scorpio

Story: Once you have the knife, you are able to prep the ingredients. Taurus says the next step is to bake the spices in an oven. SCORPIO has one in their cupcake shop. You meet Scorpio in the cupcake shop and ask to use the oven. She says sure. While you wait for the spices to toast, Scorpio tells you how she’s a poison enthusiast and admires the poison you got done (she says, pointing to your blue eye). You shy away and say you didn’t exactly want to be poisoned. Scorpio: “Oh.” Ding! The spices are done. Scorpio hands them to you and says she has to close up shop. It’s a little suspicious, but whatever. You thank her for the help. Chandra: “Well, that was easy! Too easy…” You decide to investigate. If you toggle between LEFT & RIGHT EYES inside the cupcake shop, you can uncover a secret door to a speakeasy.

Gameplay: Sneak inside the speakeasy and listen to Scorpio and Serpens’ conversation without being caught.

Chapter 8: Aquarius

Story: When you arrive at the bottom of the speakeasy, you see Serpens and Scorpio laughing about how great it is to poison and be poisoned. FLASHES remind you that Serpens is the one who poisoned you. You get angry! Your dark eye turns ORANGE with a bright intensity! Your body starts to glow with a burning heat! “He’s just sitting at a BAR like nothing happened?!?!” Your whole body BURSTS into a flame of rage, exposing you to Serpens and Scorpio. Chandra: “That’s him! That’s the guy that did this to me!” Scorpio: “Where is he? Lemme at ‘em!” Scorpio takes a second to realize Chandra is referring to Serpens. Scorpio starts to laugh. “Psht… Serpens? Nah, this guy’s chill. Surely there’s been a misunderstanding.” Serpens speaks with a deadly hiss: “Sheeee made a wissshhh on me.” Serpens dares to smile at you. Your rage burns brighter and brighter, and the bar starts to catch fire. Scorpio tries to stop the fire from spreading: “My cupcakes! My poisons!” Serpens: “Ssssee? I’m not the one hurting people... she is.” Scorpio says they don’t care who hurt who, they’ll never forgive you for burning their house down. Serpens slithers away. Scorpio calls 9-1-1 to report the fire and tells you to cool off. AQUARIUS arrives, filled to the brim with cold and crispy water! They need help hosing down Scorpio’s bakeshop and speakeasy.

Gameplay: Put the fires out all across Scorpio’s bake shop and speakeasy by spraying Aquarius’s hose. Navigate through the shop via platforms visible in your alternate viewpoints.

Chapter 9: Cancer

Story: Once the fire is out, Aquarius thanks you for the help, and asks what happened. You tell Aquarius about how you got bit, and how you were trying to make a cure. Chandra: “Wait. The cure!!” You realize your ingredients are completely burnt in the fire. You can’t make your potion anymore. Aquarius: “Whoa. That sucks.” You offhanded make a comment that you wish you could go back in time, stop yourself from burning Scorpio’s house down, or heck, stop Serpens from biting you in the first place. Aquarius: “Haha. Yeah, I know the feeling. I tried to go back in time once, but Cancer denied my permit. I guess wanting to eat the same piece of cake twice is a crime…” Chandra: “Wait, you can go back in time? For real?” Aquarius: “Uhh… Duh. Just get permission from Cancer.” You go to the castle, where CANCER is hearing out civilian requests. Covered in lucky charms, eyes piercing blue, Cancer denies most requests on account of “it’s not safe”. You tell Cancer how you want to turn back time. Cancer says it’s far too dangerous. Cancer: “The only way to go back in time is to use THIS hourglass (kept on a shelf high above Cancer’s throne). You’ll have to go through me before I let you mess with the space-time-continuum.” Challenge accepted.

Gameplay: Get to the hourglass while dodging Cancer’s larger-than-life crab claws to throw you out of the castle. You now have the ability to rage-burn wooden obstacles in your way, or melt ice snakes.

Chapter 10: Gemini

Story: Once you touch the hourglass, you TELEPORT inside. It appears as though you are wandering through the desert, hiking over sand dunes, until you come across the Temple of Gemini. Inside, you find the being once known as Gemini, who guards a Time Machine. Gemini tells you the story of how they once tried to alter the course of time, but it never goes the way you think it will. The time traveling created a split in reality, which severed Gemini’s mind into two entities. Gemini steps into the light and reveals they have two faces: Time Wasted and Precious Time. Time Wasted remembers the mistakes Gemini made in the old reality, while Precious Time is able to live an unburdened new life. Since time traveling, they have taken an oath to make sure nobody else alters the course of time again. Gemini claps their hands. The temple begins to rumble. SAND pours in from all sides! You’re going to be buried alive unless you can get to that time machine in time.

Gameplay: You must retrieve the Time Machine to escape Gemini’s temple before the sand buries you alive!

Chapter 11: Serpens pt. 1

Story: You retrieve the time machine and go back to the beginning. Here, you live out your backstory once again. You can try to fight, flee, or freeze to stop being tricked by Serpens. Serpens will always bite you, then throw you to space. However, you also get to see how the people on Earth saw you flying through the sky, mistook you for a beautiful shooting star, and also made wishes on you. You get to hear their wishes, and how in awe they are of you. You get to rewatch the citizens of Mars in a new light, hear how they are so impressed by you, inspired even. Even the ones who judged you and called you a mess are impressed that you have the balls to be EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE. You can’t change the past, but look how many hearts you have changed. You can change how you treat yourself. You can change what you are to become.

Gameplay: Try to stop Serpens from biting you. Mostly button-mashing, cinematic experience.

Chapter 12: Leo

Story: Once you accept that there’s nothing you can do to change the past, you wake up back in the castle. Chandra: “How long have I been out?” Cancer says she warned you this would happen. She’s upset and wants to jail you for disobeying her, when Leo steps in. Leo is more empathetic, and reminds Cancer that everyone deals with things differently. Some people have to learn through their own experience. It’s not easy to experience, or watch. But you had no other options, since there’s no more cure available. You ask Leo how long you have to live. Leo: “There’s no way of knowing. It’s celestial poison, but you’re a human. It could be days, it could be decades, millenniums even.” You start to panic. Leo: “Instead of focusing on when you’re going to die, the more important question might be: what are you going to do with the time you have now?” You don’t know. Leo: “Well…. wanna play a game I made up? You see, I’m a bit of a ‘creative’ type. I love making up new games to play!” Chandra: “Uhhh… sure.”

Gameplay: Play a game of chess with Leo. Leo claims they invented the game… but you’re not so sure about that. Toggle between different views to see what would happen if you selected various moves. As you play through these moves, you also think about your life and what direction you want it to go in. You think about the characters you’ve met, how Cancer reacted to being bit by Serpens, versus how Taurus reacted. When you beat Leo, you have clarity.

Chapter 13: Sagittarius

Story: Leo and Capricorn tell Chandra Serpens has been out of control lately, even infecting Cancer, but their law enforcement hasn’t done much about it. Chandra: “I… I want to fight back! I want Serpens to pay for hurting me, for hurting Cancer, for hurting Taurus.” Leo: “That’s great! Go for it.” Chandra: “Yeah!” Chandra triumphantly marches out of the castle. “Wait, where is Serpens?” A song tickles Chandra’s ear. She follows the voice to find Sagittarius playing a washboard by a campfire, singing a cajun tune. ♬ “Down on the back roads, thought I saw a toad. Gave it a lil kiss, suddenly my eyes slowed. Ain’t to toad on dis road, sure is cold. Then he hissed. Didn’t like my kiss. Threw me into the abyss! Shoulda got permissh.” ♬ Chandra asks what the song is about; it sounds like it’s about Serpens. Sagittarius says it sure is! Chandra asks if they know where Serpens is. Sagittarius says they sure do! But getting there is a bit of a journey. Just follow the music, and you can find him too.

Gameplay: You follow Sagittarius’s song via the different EYE views, all the way off mars and up to the big dipper.

Chapter 14: Pisces

Story: At the big dipper, you see Serpens. He’s got a hold of one half of PISCES! You try to stop him, but he sinks his fangs in and infects one of Pisces’ fish. You punch him, forcing him to release Pisces! It breaks one of his fangs off, stuck inside Pisces, who falls back into the big dipper. As Pisces sinks to the bottom leaving a trail of blood, Serpens slithers away. You want to go after Serpens, but you can’t leave Pisces in this state alone. You dive in.

Gameplay: Use your different viewpoints to dive deep into the big dipper, find Pisces, and remove the fang from their side.

Chapter 15: Serpens pt. 2

Story: You take the fang out of Pisces. Pisces is weak, and might not recover fully from their wounds. However, they want to help with what time they have left. Pisces has the ability to teleport through space and time. You ride atop Pisces as you teleport through space and time in order to find Serpens. When you do, you hop on Serpens’s back and must run past all of his obstacles until you make it to his head, where you can finally deliver justice and destroy Serpens with his own fang.

Gameplay: Use your viewpoints to advance along Serpens’ back until you reach his head, while dodging ice snakes and various obstacles which Serpens throws your way. Ultimately: you may destroy Serpens.

Chapter 16: Chandra, Again

Now that you’ve defeated Serpens, you can finally return home. You say goodbye to the people of Mars, and use Pisces to teleport home once again.
